And why you need to let them go...
Each one of us builds a collection of unhelpful beliefs over the course of our lives. These are (often unknowingly) influencing our ability to live healthy, happy lives. Here are some common unhelpful beliefs that might be keeping you stuck in a quarter-life crisis.
'Everyone has life figured out and I'm the only one who has no idea what they're doing'
You are not at all alone! Everyone goes through periods of doubt and confusion about the direction of their life and nobody ever truly feels like they have all aspects of life running smoothly. Even the people who seem successful or look like they know exactly what they're doing struggle some times with things like 'imposter syndrome' or wondering if they're doing the right thing.
'Adult life is difficult, miserable and meaningless'
Yes, adulthood can feel overwhelming sometimes and inevitably you'll encounter some really tough times. But, that doesn't mean it can't also be amazing, exciting and fulfilling. It's your responsibility to create a life you love and that feels meaningful TO YOU. If you just accept that life is miserable then guess what, it's going to feel miserable. Get curious, mix up your routine and start introducing some fun and excitement to your everyday life in whatever ways you can.
'There must be something wrong with me! I've reached some form of success, but I'm just not happy'
If you've reached any form of conventional 'success' but you don't feel happy, it doesn't mean there's anything wrong with you. The most likely reason you're not happy is that you've reached someone else's version of success, not your own. So now you need to re-evaluate what is actually valuable and meaningful to you and what your version of success looks like.
'I can't change career because everyone will judge me'
This one is a little tricky, because it's likely that there will be some people in your life who will judge you. However, you need decide what's worse, living a life you hate for years upon years or dealing with the judgement of people around you. It's a scary leap to take to make a big career change, but it's very important for your mental health and quality of life to explore different careers until you find one that feels right for you.
'I have no idea what I want to do with my life, so I guess I'm stuck living like this forever'
You don't need to have your whole life planned out to start making changes to your current lifestyle. Get curious about small changes that you can make straight away to make life feel more enjoyable. Explore new places, activities and hobbies. Meet new people and stay open to new ideas and perspectives. Eventually you'll stumble across things that inspire your vision for the future.
Hopefully, you're now ready to start letting go of some unhelpful beliefs. You can also check out how to transform your crisis into curiosity.
